Helping Your Child with Spelling
Many parents worry about their child's spelling; this is understandable but it is important that children do not feel so under pressure to spell things correctly that they are scared to experiment with new vocabulary. At St. Francis, we will not correct every spelling; we believe that this stifles a child's creativity and demoralises them. Your child's teacher may correct between 3-5 spellings within a piece of work; they might also 'close mark' a small section of work, correcting every mistake in that paragraph or section but not continuing this throughout the piece.
There are strategies we use to help children with spelling; some of these are detailed below so that you can support your child at home. If you do have particular concerns, please contact me at vcox@stfrancis.cc
