St Clare of Assisi
St Clare was born "Chiara Offreduccio" on 16 July 1193 and died on 11 August 1253. Her feast day is 11 August. Clare is the patron saint of television, telegraphs, telephones and eye disorders. You may wonder why she is patron saint of television - when she was too ill to attend Mass, she was miraculously able to see and hear it on the wall of her room.
She was a wealthy young woman who was reputed for her holiness. She abandoned all these riches to follow God's calling. Clare founded a religious community of women, the "Poor Clares", whose rule of life was based on the ideals of St Francis of Assisi to whom she took a vow of poverty.
Clare was canonized in 1255 by Pope Urban IV. He changed the name of the Order of Poor Ladies to the "Order of St Clare".
There is a lot written about Clare on the world wide web, some of the more informative sites are below.
