Year 7 Page

During Year 7, all pupils receive the same curriculum; texts may vary according to teachers and groups but every year 7 student can expect to cover the areas detailed below.

Autumn term 1(September to October half-term) An introduction to English at St. Francis: research and study skills, independent study, enjoyment of reading and writing for a range of purposes and audiences.

The influence of traditional tales upon literature, exploring texts such as: The Bible, Homer's Odyssey, The Arthurian Legend, myths from other cultures, Greek myths and legends.  Pupils will study the conventions of the quest, heroes and villains and the oral tradition of stories, considering how these all continue to influence texts around us now.

Autumn term 2 (October half-term to Christmas)

A study of Victorian Literature and the context within which it was produced; textual extracts from Jane Eyre, Nicholas Nickleby or Oliver Twist will be explored, with opportunities for pupils to explore the writers' techniques and to experiment with a range of writing for different purposes and audiences.

Spring term 1 (January to February half-term)

Either

Poetry - an introduction to performance poetry and one pre-1914 poet, such as Robert Browning.

OR

The study of a novel such as: Goodnight Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian, Tribes by Catherine Macphail or The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo.

Summer term 2 (Whitsun to July)

An introduction to theatre: Greek Theatre to Renaissance, including Greek Tragedy and Medieval Mystery Plays.  This unit allows pupils the opportunity to find out about the origins of theatre and to make traditional Greek masks and then moves onto Shakespeare's theatre to pupils and involves a brief study of a range of extracts from Shakespeare's plays.  Teachers may use one or more of the following plays: Hamlet (usually the Ghost scene); Macbeth (usually scenes involving the witches); Romeo and Juliet (the prologue or perhaps Romeo's meeting with Juliet); A Midsummer Night's Dream (possibly a scene involving Puck or the players) etc.  During this half-term, pupils also have the opportunity to visit Stratford-upon-Avon and may be able to make a cardboard copy of Shakespeare's Theatre.

As part of your study of each unit, pupils will learn how to write for different audiences and purposes and how to respond to a range of literary and non-literary texts. They will also learn how to speak in front of an audience and how to work as part of a group.

Independent Study is an important part of English at St. Francis of Assisi: we expect pupils to be able to work independently on research projects and wider reading from the start of year 7.

Pupils must always carry a reading book, even on days when you do not have English: reading is vital to extending vocabulary, learning how writers structure their work and understanding the effects of literary techniques.
