Cross-Curricular History

Citizenship

cithist

It is almost impossible to find an issue within our schemes of work which does not relate to Citizenship. Our Roman assessment in Year 7 looks at the idea of what is and is not civilised behaviour. In Year 8 our study of the Reformation reinforces the importance of faith and the need for ever greater understanding of different points of view. The issue of race is clearly addressed in our unit of the Black Peoples of the Americas. In Year 9 our first unit includes consideration of why and how the franchise was extended in the C 19th and our work on the C 20th includes a consideration of not only what happened during the Holocaust but also how we can guard against the ideas and attitudes which led to it.

Literacy and Numeracy

litnumhist

There are comparatively few opportunities to develop Numeracy in our subject. However we do use graphs and charts to present information and we consider whether statistics are reliable or not.

The study of History is replete with opportunities to use a wide variety of literary forms. Our work on sources can include the use of novels, diaries, letters, speeches, official reports and many other examples of the written word. Our assessments, whilst focusing on the skills and concepts of the subject, encourage pupils to express themselves accurately and, where appropriate, at length.
