Behaviour & Culture

At SFA, we believe that children thrive when there are high expectations of their behaviour, and when there is recognition of excellent effort. Every child has the right to be educated in an environment that is safe, respectful and conducive to learning, and a responsibility to try their best in order to fulfil their potential.

Rewards

To acknowledge and encourage maximum effort, positive reward points are issued when students excel in any area of school life.

The categories for positive points are linked to our school virtues; Intentional, Attentive, Eloquent, Integrity, Compassion and Service.

Behaviour Points

As well as positive reward points, we also issue Behaviour Points when a student does not try as hard as they should, and when behaviour harms the well-being or learning of others.

For relatively minor misdemeanours, a student might receive just one or two Behaviour points. Such points would not necessarily be issued because the student has misbehaved, as such, but rather because there is an aspect of their approach to school (e.g. organisation) that needs to be tweaked, and the Behaviour points serve to flag this. Repeated or more serious misdemeanours can carry up to five Behaviour points – in such cases, a student would typically be set an additional sanction (e.g. a lunch-time or after-school detention) for the incident.

In Classroom Behaviour

In lessons we believe that every child is entitled to disruption free learning. This means that if a student is disrupting their learning, someone else or preventing the teacher form teacher initially they will receive a reminder to correct their behaviour. If their behaviour continues they receive a warning which then carries a behaviour point of -1. If it still continues the student is awarded a removal, and will be removed from the lesson and the following 6 periods; equating to a day in the behaviour hub.

However if they show remorse for their behaviour and complete their first 3 periods in the behaviour hub in silence and produce work of a high quality they have the opportunity to return to lessons early. This is known as our 3 Green and Go system.

SFA Spaces – Out of Classroom Behaviour

SFA Spaces is our whole school approach to ensuring that our transitions, corridors, and spaces around the school site are safe, respectful and calm. With 1200 people moving at the same time in school it is important that everyone is safe, respectful and calm- the opposite to this is unthinkable with so many students. This system protects everyone in school, keeps them safe from injury and creates lots of opportunities for praise as students move around school in a brilliant manner. Staff ‘catch’ students being intentional with their choices and reward positively but will also sanction if someone is not being safe, respectful or calm. SFA corridors and spaces should be delightful for the most vulnerable in our community, and Spaces is how we protect and make school life better for everyone.
